We are special people
 About us

Background

Southport and Formby Special Athletes was originally formed in 1983 as a Special Olympics Group. Since then many of our athletes have successfully competed in various regional, national and international events for people with learning disabilities.

Although affiliated to Special Olympics Great Britain, in 1994 we became a Registered Charity, independent of any statutory agency.

Our committee, coaches and helpers are all volunteers.

Our activities can contribute to the physical and social development of people with learning disabilities. Through successful experience in sport, the athletes gain confidence and build a positive image.

All our athletes, regardless of their ability level are encouraged to enter competitive events, either locally or nationally. Such events are expensive and are financed through donations and fund-raising events.

Sponsorship and donations are always welcome.

We are an accredited Club with Sefton Sports Council's Active Club Award scheme.

Activities

Our activities take place in the Southport College sports hall every Sunday morning (except bank holidays) between 10.00 am and 12.00 noon. Football skills training takes place in the sports hall between 12.15pm and 1.30pm.

We provide a range of Athletic training including...

  • Boccia
  • Kurling
  • Net ball
  • Table tennis
  • Ball skills
  • Rounders
  • Skittles

We encourage our athletes to become proficient and from time to time we take part in Boccia and Kurling tournaments with other local groups.

Football skills training is open to male or female athletes and prepares our athletes for tournaments with other groups within the area.

Several volunteer coaches are available each Sunday to help with all our activities.
